The Most Compelling Reasons to Shoot RAW Digital Camera Files Are:
1. When you are trying to produce the finest digital photo prints possible.
2. When you do not have full control of the environment or your subject during the photo shoot.
3. When the scene contrast or lighting ratio is beyond the recordable range of your digital camera chip.
4. When you are a little out of practice.
5. When you would like a little more of a safety net during the shoot.
6. When there is no chance to ever repeat, duplicate or re-shoot the assignment.
The Weak Arguments For Not Shooting RAW Camera Files Are:
1. I could not think of any that did not sound like I was crying, I was lazy, I did not care about my reputation, my career or most importantly, my clients.
A final question: If you make any color or brightness adjustments to your JPEG files after a shoot then why not spend that time making the same adjustments to a RAW file? The end result will be much better and take nearly the same amount of your time.
A final thought: I will paraphrase a statement by a camera manufacturer I read a few years ago. In camera (read JPEG shooting) processing algorithms are optimized for speed, desktop algorithms (read RAW shooting) are optimized for quality.
Future articles will discuss the optimum digital camera settings for shooting RAW camera files and some photo tips on how to process your RAW files to produce the best digital photo prints.c
